Orthodontics
Traditional braces and/or Invisalign for teens and adults can cosmetically correct crooked teeth, an overbite, underbite, crossbite, deep bite, etc. See the KidZdent Orthodontic section of this Web site for more details.
Labial Frenulectomy
The labial frenum is a thick band of gum tissue located between the two upper central teeth. Surgical removal of this tissue allows for the two upper front teeth to move together. Without removal of this thick band of tissue, orthodontics cannot move the teeth together. This is a simple procedure that takes approximately 30 minutes. It is recommended that the patient avoid spicy foods for a few days afterward, and consume a soft diet without direct biting with the front teeth for a few days. Discomfort is minimal, and is usually treated with Tylenol, Advil or Aleve.
Anterior Bonding
Cosmetic bonding of the upper and/or lower anterior (front) teeth is beneficial in closing spaces, reshaping teeth, and improving tooth length. The white bonded resin material is matched to the patient’s natural tooth color, and is quite strong. Patients with anterior bonding should always wear a mouth guard during sports, and should avoid biting or chewing on hard items such as ice cubes, hard candies, pens and pencils, etc. Normal biting and chewing should not affect the cosmetic bonding. Patients will frequently benefit from anterior cosmetic bonding after their orthodontic treatment is completed.
Gingivectomy
A gingivectomy procedure is indicated when a patient has a “gummy” smile, and/or short tooth length. The gum tissue above the upper anterior (front) teeth is surgically cut back in a domed shape to reveal more tooth surface with a very natural appearance. This is a highly successful cosmetic procedure that produces a major, positive change for the patient. Patients must remember to gently brush their gums daily in order to keep the look of their new smile.
Professional Custom Bleaching
KidZdent provides personal, professional bleaching that lasts a lifetime. The patient has an impression taken for a custom-fitted bleaching tray, and is provided with professional bleaching gel and instructions by the doctor. Most patients will wear the custom bleach tray overnight for a period of a week or two, and then return for a follow up visit to check on the progress of the bleaching. This professional bleaching solution is strong and should not be used more than recommended by the doctor, as it can cause damage to the tooth enamel. The patient can update their bleaching every six months as part of their regular preventive dental visit. (KidZdent does not recommend over-the-counter bleaching systems because they do not work as well as the professional custom bleaching systems, and they are frequently abused by young patients. Overuse of these over-the-counter products can result in damage to the tooth surface.)
