Dental Decay Is On The Rise

In 2001, 22% of our nation’s preschool children had dental decay. In 2009, the number had risen to 28%. Can you imagine that 28% of all three year old children have dental decay? This is due to many factors:  education of parents, lack of early referrals by pediatricians and school nurses, poor diet and nutrition, [...]

FLUORIDE THERAPY

Dental decay is the most common disease of childhood in the United States today. Up to 50% of children in American have at least one cavity by 6 years of age. This is entirely preventable with the following measures:

* A healthy diet
* Good home care that includes regular tooth brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing and using a fluoride mouth rinse
* Regular visits to a pediatric dentist starting at AGE ONE (as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists & the American Academy of Pediatrics)
* Fluoride supplements when the township water supply is not fluoridated (most towns in NJ do not have fluoride added to their water supply)

As teeth develop, the incorporation of fluoride into the enamel creates a harder surface that is more resistant to decay. Drops or chewable tables are the ideal delivery system of systemic fluoride for children.

The following dosage chart should help you when prescribing a fluoride supplement for your patients:

AGE DOSAGE

0-6 Months —-

6 Months – 3 years 0.25 mg

3 Years – 6 Years 0.5 mg

7 Years – 16 Years 1.0 mg

Please join forces with KidZdent to help us develop the Decay-Free Generation following the AAPD and ADA guidelines for early dental intervention and the proper prescribing of fluoride supplements.
